The December patch for Outlook 2010 has been yanked from the update list. Yet again, a well intended change is causing more harm then good. While the effects may not be noticeable to begin with, some of your users may start complaining when common features are disabled or completely gone. Some of the issues are:

  • Outlook is starting in Safe Mode
  • Reading page missing
  • Templates missing
  • Formatting like font. menus and columns are now default
  • CC and BCC missing

So what do you do to fix it? Uninstall KB3114409. Close Outlook 2010 and then open the Control Panel, double-click on Programs and Features and then click on View installed updates. It might take a minute or two for the entire list of updates to load. In the upper-right corner of the Program and Features window is a search box. Type in KB3114409. Right click on Update for Microsoft Outlook 2012 (KB3114409) 32-bit Edition and click Uninstall.

You will need Admin access to remove the patch. When the Uninstall window appears, click Uninstall. The installation takes about a minute to complete. Click OK when prompted. It might ask you to reboot. Reboot and Outlook should be back to normal. The users previous settings will return.
